Semmering Railway, Austria
Part 1 -Tunnels and Viaducts Along the Railway Line Seen from the Tower and Viewpoint Above Breitenstein
Weinzettlwand Tunnel to Adlitzgraben Viaduct
Near the Wolfsbergkogel station you will find a tower overlooking a good part of the Semmeringbahn (Semmering Railway). The location is called Doppelreiterkogel and you get there by following the 'Bahnwanderweg' signs. From this tower, supplemented with the nearby lookout (the '20 Schilling' lookout), you can see all the tunnels and viaducts of the central portion of the Semmering Railway.
Below is a sequence of photos from these lookout points starting with Weinzettlwand Tunnel and following the line uphill.
Weinzettlwand Tunnel
Length 688m
The side wall of this tunnel opens up in part to the outside (called a gallery). To the left one can make out the exit. As the curves almost 90 degrees the entry point (out to the right) is not visible from the tower.
Km 96.7 Weinzettlfeld Tunnel
Elevation 785m, length 239m
This tunnel is covered by trees amd, mostly, a green field. Shortly after the exit from this tunnel the line curves left into Breitenstein Station.
Km 97.6: Breitenstein Station
Elevation 792m
The train travels west (left) towards Semmering.
Km 98.1 Kleiner Krausel Tunnel
Elevation 804m, length: 13.55m
This is the first tunnel after Breitenstein. It's not very long. West (left) of the tunnel comes the Krauselklause viaduct (the train on the picture travels east, down into the valley).
Km 98.1 Krauselklause Viaduct
Elevation 806m, length 87m, slope 1:60
This viaduct has two storeys of arches.
Km 98.2 Polleroswand Tunnel
Length 337m
This tunnel connects the Krauselklause viaduct (right) with the Kalte Rinne viaduct (left).
Km 98.7 Kalte Rinne Viaduct
Elevation 813m, length 184m, height 46m, slope 1:60.
The photo was taken from the '20 Schilling' viewpoint.
Km 100.4 Adlitzgraben Viaduct
Elevation 851m, length 151m, height 24m
This viaduct is also known as the 'Fleischmann Viadukt' - the German model-railway manufacturer Fleischmann must have used it as the prototype for a model. Regretably, not much of the viaduct is visible.

Most of the photos on this page were taken from this tower.
